A Delhi woman was arrested Thursday on felony drug charges
after allegedly impersonating a nurse to obtain unauthorized
prescription drugs, according to the Merced County Sheriff's
Department.
Kristin Gianotti, 36, was arrested at her home after she reportedly
called several local Walgreens pharmacies to order refills
for the drug Phentermine, said sheriff's spokesman Ed Katen.
Phentermine,
an appetite
suppressant typically prescribed to people at medical
risk because of their weight, can be addictive.
A clerk at a Walgreens pharmacy in Merced notified police
of the alleged impersonations after staff members at the local
medical office where Gianotti claimed to be a nurse denied
ordering the refills.
Gianotti had apparently been legally prescribed the drug several
years ago, but had not been a patient of the prescribing doctor
since 2003, said Katen.
"It's pretty unusual for someone to have enough guts
to try to call in their own prescriptions," Katen said.
Gianotti also tried to obtain additional drug refills under
the alias Kristin Maldonado, he said.
Upon her arrest, Gianotti reportedly admitted making the false
calls.
Gianotti is charged with three felony counts of obtaining
a controlled substance by way of fraud.
