Dennis O'Neill and Martini Limited has been
fined $61,000 and has been ordered to refund consumers nearly
$200,000 for making false claims regarding weight loss. The
Commerce Commission has imposed the huge penalty to the weight
loss company for providing incorrect information about its
alleged fat reducing products.
The company marketed the product Celluslim,
meant for weight
loss and cellulite reduction. The bochures provided with
the product claimed that it could melt away fat within a period
of three weeks without any effort of dieting or exercise.
According to the Commission, at one stage
when the company was facing a shortage of its product, it
made up for the shortage by relabelling honey and garlic and
apple cider vinegar tablets, to fill Celluslim orders. Though
the company is denying these accusations and is planning to
appeal against the penalty.
