New Diet drug alli is popular even with effects

July 02, 2007

Alli that is pronounced "al-EYE," is an over-the-counter weight-loss drug that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in February. It arrived in stores earlier this month. The Alli capsules prevent your body from absorbing about a quarter of the fat you eat.

GlaxoSmithKlein touts alli as the only FDA-approved weight loss product available without a prescription. It says the drug can help people lose 50 percent more weight than by diet alone.
The company recommends that the pill be combined with an overall diet plan that includes meal planning and exercise. It says that users should consult with a dietitian before go to start Alli diet pill, which is essentially a half-strength version of the prescription weight-loss drug Xenical.

While it stresses the pill is not dangerous, GlaxoSmithKlein says that taking alli while eating fatty foods may cause gas with oily spotting and frequent stools that may be loose and hard to control.
Alli and Xenical reduce the intake of fat soluble vitamins. That's why users should take vitamins while they're on the drugs. The drug has already attracted some controversy. Television networks recently rejected an ad from the diet pill industry depicting the dangers of taking alli, but the spot has made the rounds on the Internet.

Still mostly people have lots of questions about new diet drug alli. First thing customers want to know about the working of this drug and its side effects. Its really good idea if users aware about the possible side effects.
Terri Storms, a pharmacist at Village Pharmacy in Gray's Creek, said last week that the store is on a back order list for alli. Even though the store didn't have the pills in stock, Storms said some customers have been asking about it.

Storms said alli may be an option for some people, but they shouldn't expect it will cure their weight-loss woes. She said some trial studies showed that people who took alli gained their weight back after a year.

Storms said that there is no magic bullet for weight control .It's definitely OK for them to try, but they have to look at the bigger picture. Dieting involves eating less and exercising more for better results.
