Federal Trade Commission says that Marketers of four brands
of weight loss pills can keep selling them, but they can't
make unproven claims that people will lose weight taking these
diet pills.
The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday fined the marketers
of four weight loss pills $25 million for making false advertising
claims ranging from rapid weight loss to reducing the risk
of cancer. Fines were levied against marketers of Xenadrine
EFX, One-A-Day WeightSmart pills, CortiSlim, CortiStress and
TrimSpa
Buyer was fined $3.2 million to settle FTC charges that its
advertisements for One-A-Day WeightSmart pills violated an
earlier FTC order that required all health claims for One-A-Day
brand vitamins to be supported by sound scientific evidence.
Buyer said that its product was marketed as a multivitamin,
not a weight-loss
pill.
Majoras said that some of the money paid as civil fines would
be returned to consumers
The marketers claimed CortiSlim would cause rapid weight loss
and that CortiStress would reduce the risk of cancer, heart
disease and other ailments, the FTC said.
The companies agreed to limit future ad claims. Their ads
ran in magazines and newspapers, on television and on the
Internet. Consumers who bought CortiSlim and Xenadrine EFX
may be eligible for refunds under the FTC's redress program
at www.ftc.gov.
