An over-the-counter weight-loss drug has obtained the permission
to market directly to consumers after a decision taken by
a federal government committee. The diet pill known as Xenical,
which prevents the body from absorbing fat, was approved as
an over-the-counter medication in mid-2004 after being sold
as a prescription medication since 2000.
Approximately 150,000 overweight or obese
people have used the diet pill since its arrival in the market
in 2000 but until now manufacturer Roche has been prevented
from identifying its brand name in advertising. But after
a decision taken by the government's drugs and poisons committee,
Xenical, the diet
pills, can be marketed directly to consumers. Diet pills
such as Phentermine
and Xenical have proven beneficial for millions of its users.
