According to a new report by a children's advocacy group,
Oregon children are growing more overweight by the year. Children
First for Oregon want state policymakers to pay closer attention
to childhood obesity which the organization calls a very serious
public health issue.
Cathy Kaufmann, research and policy associate with Children
First, said overweight children are at risk of developing
medical conditions including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure
and heart disease, the ailments that follow them into adulthood.
The cost of conditions related to adult obesity in Oregon
was $781 million in 2003, she said, citing a 2004 study in
the journal Obesity Research.
Obesity can be controlled by following a healthy and proper
