Archeologists investigating an ancient hospital in Scotland
discovered remains of an ancient herb which was used by the
monks to keep off hunger. The forgotten plant used by Augustine
monks has been identified as the tubers or Bitter Vetch.
Earlier monks chewed the licorice flavored herbs to make
them forget to eat. Its medicinal effects lasted for weeks
or months. Experts see a new weight loss aid in this medicinal
plant but said it will take months of clinical tests before
the herb was given final approval for consumption. The plant
remains was found in the drains of the 12th century monastery
in Soutra Aisle, south of the Scottish capital. The monastery
founded in 1160 looked after the poor, travelers, pilgrims
as well as the sick.
