The increasing health problems have hit the population in
more than one aspect.
Apart from personal health, the affected community has witnessed
a rising expenditure on healthcare medications & products.
According to the healthcare researchers, an increasing number
of people are turning towards alternative remedies - including
herbal supplements and multivitamins - for their medical treatments
because of the continuously growing cost of traditional healthcare
procedures.
However, medical officials caution that most of the alternative
remedies are not regulated by the Federal Government and could
do more harm than good.
For example, a herbal supplement such as Kava Kava, a plant
commonly used to treat stress and insomnia, has been shown
to cause liver damage in some clinical trials.
Overall, the alternative-supplement industry has become a
big business.
A California research and consulting newsletter informed,
Americans spent about $19.8 billion on herbal supplements
in 2003, a 20 percent jump from 1999.
The fact that healthcare costs still continue to outpace
income, more people are likely to opt for alternative treatments
due to the unaffordable conventional medical care.
