It is a well known fact that being overweight is a prime
factor towards a higher risk of stroke. However, according
to a new study, the amount of abdominal fat is a stronger
indicator of stroke risk.
The study that followed for 23 years, and studied more than
9100 Israeli men aged 40 years or older, found that men with
lots of abdominal fat are at a higher risk of a fatal stroke.
By the end of the study, 316 study participants had died
of a stroke.
Men with excess abdominal fat, regardless of their body mass
index (BMI), were seen as more likely to die of a stroke compared
with those with their body fat evenly distributed.
Overall, a higher BMI indicated a higher risk of having a
fatal stroke. However, the amount of abdominal fat reigned
as the unperturbed indicator of stroke risk.
It was concluded that those with abdominal obesity were 50
percent more likely to die of a stroke than men with the body
fat evenly distributed.
The study was conducted by researchers at Tel-Aviv University
and the Chami Sheba Medical Center in Tel-Hashomer, Israel.
The findings were reported in the May issue of the journal,
Stroke.
