In the battle against obesity epidemic, new drugs and alternatives
are being explored by the healthcare industry.
Following this, Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced the
results of a Phase 2 obesity study of Pramlintide - an existing
diabetes drug and a new drug for weight-loss.
The study showed that a high dose of Pramlintide helped obese
patients to lose 5 per cent weight when given as an injection
three times a day.
A total of 204 obese subjects took part in the study, 160
without diabetes and 44 with non-insulin-treated Type II diabetes.
It was found that patients with obesity class I (BMI of 30
to 35 kg/m2), benefited most from the drug, losing up to 5
percent body weight in 16 weeks. The drug was well tolerated
and the most serious adverse effect experience by patients
was mild nausea.
Now that the results are encouraging enough, phase II trials
are being planned by Amylin which will test 400 people.
Slowly but surely the refining & development of the new
drug is expected to cater to the overweight community.
