A safe and effective way to perform gastric bypass operation
with the help of a surgical robot has been developed by surgeons
at the Stanford University School of Medicine. It comes as
an improvement to the conventional technique called laparoscopic
surgery.
Myriam Curet, who developed the method, says that the new
robotic technique makes the surgery easier. The robotic system
has a 3-D camera to aid visualization as compared to the 2-D
fiber optic cameras used in conventional tools. It also has
flexible wrist. The robotic surgery is beneficial to the morbidly
obese patients as the robotic arms are strong enough to stay
steady when working in the patients big abdomens. It reduces
torque of the abdominal wall. Gastric surgery is a widely
popular from of weight loss surgery. It helps to decrease
the stomach size, limit food intake and also bypasses a significant
portion of the small intestine.
