Washington just days after the government gave conditional
approval to the sale of an over-the-counter fat-blocker, customer
advocates are asking officials to take the prescription version
off the market.
The group Public Citizen claims some scientists have found
a relation between orlistat and precancerous lesions in the
large intestine.
Roche sells the diet pills (Phentermine,
Adipex, Xenical etc...) under the brand name of Xenical. They
block the absorption of fats at mealtime.
The director of Public Citizen's research arm, Sidney Wolfe,
says studies in rats pointed to increases in microscopic lesions
that some experts think are precancerous.
Xenical's labeling says there was no confirmation of cancer
when rats and mice were given the equal of dozens of times
the human dose.
