Height & Nutrition

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Most women stop growing at a certain age, but at the age of 21 or during pregnancies and essentially high hormonal times, they can experiencing another generally small growth spurt.  With pregnancy, it is usually because the spine is more stretched out.  But your height in general is determined by your bone length.  Boys usually grow the most between 12 and 15 and girls between the ages of 10 and 13.  But you can continue to grow more slowly up to the age of 21.  From there, you may gradually shrink due to loss of bone density over time.  The research in terms of height is unclear.  Most people will stay around the height of their parents or somewhere in between.  Boys actually have a higher chance of growing more at an older age.  But there are some who say nutritional factors have a great prevalence in this.  For example, those who are malnourished tend to be stunted in their growth among other things.  In addition, if you don’t have enough meat and dairy in your diet, you are unlikely to grow to your full potential.  So in those cases, I have actually seen some experience a sudden growth spurt when those particular nutrients were supplemented into their diets, even a few inches.

Switch To Soy

Friday, July 10th, 2009

When looking to go healthier, lose a little weight, etc, I switched from many meat based proteins to salmon and soy.  Well I mostly switched to soy.  Salmon provides you with a lot of the good fats, but tofu is known for a lot of benefits.  And frankly, with edamame, it was easy, I could buy it at the grocery store, and it is extremely filling.  But in terms of soy, the question for many would be does it actually promote weight loss?  Before I say yes or no, there’s a lot of things to consider.  The nutritional value of soy based products is extremely high.  They provide quite a bit of protein without the fat and otherwise associated with many meats, and it also is thought to have many of the benefits of skim milk.  It is low in calories in general and provides you with substantial fullness when you eat it, and it is thought that as a part of a healthy diet, it would improve significantly.  But while multiple studies have evaluated the effects, it hasn’t been connected directly as a weight loss supplement, at least not in the way that others like glucomannnan or caffeine have.  It definitely reduces your bad cholesterol by up to 40% and it can reduce the risk of heart problems.  But in terms of actual weight loss, the results are not as sure unless of course you consider it like fruits and vegetables, as part of a healthy diet.
